So let me get this straight! The FBI put a GPS tracking device on a students (Yasir Afifi) car. Apparently the Arab-American student was targeted for a terrorism investigation. Let's see, Yasir is a US born citizen and was under surveillance for about six months. FBI agents came to collect their property about 48 hours after it was discovered by a auto repair shop.

It's very disturbing to hear about this kind of thing happening under our noses. And best of all, it's all completely legal according to a ruling by the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals. They say it is "legal for law enforcement to secretly place a tracking device on a suspect's car" without getting a warrant and it doesn't matter if the car is parked in a private property or not. Yasir took pictures of the device and posted it for everyone to see. Some shots of the device are below!

The GSP device found in Yasir's car was an Orion Guardian ST820 tracking device made by a company called Cobham. This device is only sold to the army and law enforcement agencies. So this basically means none of us are "safe" in our own country--even citizens who have no connection with any terrorist groups. I am just glad this guy didn't get into any trouble and the FBI agents were nice to him. I can understand the FBI investigating possible terrorist plotting in the country and all but at least do a better job with your surveillance so your equipment is not so easily discovered. One thing I see wrong/disturbing about this whole thing is that they don't need any kind of warrant for any of it. But I guess what you don't know, won't hurt anyone -- until you find out that is.
